Going to concerts is a rite of passage for most teenagers. The rush of the music, people, sweat, noise, food, all of it can be so amazing. The only thing that could make it go south is getting hurt.

With so many people, and often times drunk, it can be pretty hectic. When going to rock/punk/screamo concerts you have to be especially careful because these concerts encourage “moshing” (having the crowd push each other around, sometimes causing fights) and many people get hurt. Large crowds can be a breeding ground for crime, so it’s time to watch your valuables (Or leave them at home!) and read these tips to protect yourself from the drunk and disorderly.

  1. Bring a friend –  Stick to the buddy system. You’ll help keep each other alert, and being a unit will make it less likely for others to prey on you.

  1. Have a cell phone – You never want to be stuck in a position where you need help, but you have no way to contact anyone.

  1. Always have cash on you – You never know when you might need money for a cab, a phone call, or some food. Just keep it in a safe place, like a zipper pocket or the inside fold of your purse.

  1. Try to wear sneakers if possible – You never know what will be on the ground, and often times your feet will be stepped on by other concert goers.

  1. Be as polite as possible – When talking to other people at the concert, be polite. You never know if they are dangerous or know someone that is.

  1. If they smell like gasoline, back away – If you see a crazy, wild drunk in your direction, go the other way. You don’t need to deal with that.

  1. If something isn’t right, it probably isn’t – If someone seems really sketchy to you, or if something seems to be really off and is making you nervous…get away! Trust your instincts and stay alert.

Most importantly, Tip #8 – HAVE FUN! Yes, concerts can be hectic, but they are also incredibly entertaining and awesome so don’t let the crazy drunks scare you away!
